Let’s face it, the terms that describe the different types of automation can be confusing. So, let’s break it down.
1.) BPA (Business Process Automation) is the use of technology (such as RPA, IA, and workflow) to automate business processes. This includes the routing of information from step-to-step and the automatic processing of tasks. RPA and IA are types of Business Process Automation, though they perform separate functions on their own.
2.) RPA (Robotic Process Automation), also called simple automation, is the automation of rules-based processes with structured data to facilitate sharing of information between applications. The systems are accessed by a user account controlled by a software robot or “bot.”
RPA automates tasks that are routine (methodical and repetitive), is able to follow instructions and perform routine tasks at a more efficient and less error prone rate, and has a broader scope (can automate any suitable pre-defined process).
3.) IA (Intelligent Automation), on the other hand, is an emerging technology (also called smart automation) that is the automation of complex and variable business processes with structured, semi-structured or unstructured data to facilitate sharing of data between applications and to process information. It encompasses RPA and workflow and adds the use of artificial intelligence technologies such as natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning.
IA automates tasks that are non-routine (requiring a thoughtful consideration and decision making), is able to improve non-routine tasks that require judgement and come to conclusions, and had a narrower scope (application should be targeted to deliver meaningful, insightful outputs).
